Cashel, County Tipperary — population a few thousand, give or take. The Rock has been keeping watch from the hill for the best part of a thousand years. We grew up under it.
They took the songs with them.
A few generations back, some of ours left these green hills for American ones. They cut timber in Pennsylvania, dug subways in New York, laid track from Chicago to the coast. They helped build the country that became America — and they took the songs of home with them in their pockets.
“It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” was meant to be a marching song. It became a homesick anthem. Every time we hear it, we think of them.
Now the traffic flows the other way.
Every summer we watch the coaches climb the hill outside town — Bostonians, Chicagoans, Sydneysiders — all coming back to see the Rock, to find a townland a great-grandmother once wrote home from.
We grew up watching that. It’s why we started this.
